AI Background Remover: Cut Any Subject Out Cleanly and Export a Transparent PNG

Background removal is the most-used editing job on the web and the one most tools still get wrong at the edges — hair, fur, glass and anything semi-transparent.

Studio portrait of a woman against a dark textured backdrop

Every listing, profile picture and ad creative eventually needs a subject on nothing. Doing it by hand means masks and refinement brushes; doing it badly means a halo around the hair and a cutout nobody will put on a product page.

OpenFilmo removes the background in one pass and returns a transparent PNG. Because the removal lives in the same workspace as generation, images and upscaling, the cutout can go straight into a listing mockup, a new background or a 4K export without moving files between tools.

What it does

Built for this specific job, not a generic generator.

Edge-precise cutouts

Handles hair, fur, glass and other semi-transparent edges where cheaper tools leave a visible halo.

Transparent PNG export

Download with real alpha transparency rather than a flat white or checkered background baked in.

Replace or generate a background

Drop the cutout onto a plain colour, a generated scene or an existing brand background.

Same credit balance

Removal, generation and upscaling draw from one balance, so a cutout and its 4K export do not need separate quotas.

How it works

Four steps, no timeline to learn.

  1. Upload the image

Use the highest-resolution version you have. Removal quality follows source quality — a 400px image will not cut cleanly at any setting.

  2. Remove the background

One pass. Check the edges at 100% zoom, especially around hair and anything translucent.

  3. Refine or replace

Keep transparency, fill a solid colour, or generate a new background that matches the lighting of the subject.

  4. Export

Download a transparent PNG for web and design use, or continue into an upscale if the destination needs more resolution.

What people make with it

The jobs this actually gets used for.

Marketplace listings

A product on white, exported with transparency, meeting listing requirements without a reshoot.

Profile and team photos

Cut a person out and place them on one consistent background across a whole team page.

Ad and social creative

Isolate a product or person so the same asset can be recombined across sizes and placements.

Catalogue clean-up

Standardise a mixed photo set — different backgrounds, different light — into one consistent treatment.

Why edges are the whole job

Anyone can cut a rectangle. The difficulty is everything that is not a rectangle.

Most cheap background removers work well on hard-edged objects and visibly fail on hair, fur, smoke, glass and motion blur. The result is technically a cutout and practically unusable, because the artefact is exactly where the eye goes first.

The practical test is to zoom to 100% and look at the boundary rather than the overall shape. If it holds there, it will hold at any export size. If it does not, no amount of upscaling will hide it — the halo gets bigger with the image.

It is also worth separating removal from resolution. Removing a background does not add detail, so start from the best source available and upscale afterwards, not before.

Credits and plans

Generation is metered in credits, shared across every tool.

One image costs 2 credits and a 4K upscale costs 4. The Free plan gives you 30 credits every month with no credit card, no watermark and commercial use included. Paid plans start at $9 for 400 credits and add faster generation and parallel tasks.

Frequently asked questions

What file format does it export?

PNG with true alpha transparency, so the cutout drops onto any background without a white box around it.

Does it work on hair and fur?

Yes — those are the cases it is built for. Check the result at 100% zoom before exporting, since fine strands are where any remover is most likely to leave artefacts.

Can I replace the background instead of removing it?

Yes. Fill a solid colour, use an existing brand background, or generate a new scene that matches the lighting of the subject.

How much does one removal cost?

One image costs 2 credits. The Free plan gives 30 credits every month with no credit card required. Paid plans start at $9 for 400 credits.

Does removing a background reduce quality?

No, but it cannot add detail either. Start from the highest-resolution source you have and upscale afterwards if the destination needs more pixels.

Can I use the cutouts commercially?

Yes. Commercial use is included on every plan including Free.

Is there a watermark?

No. Exports are watermark-free on every plan, including the Free tier.

Can I batch process a catalogue?

Process images one at a time in the browser. For a large catalogue, run the set in sequence — the credit cost is the same per image either way.

What image sizes are supported?

Higher resolution sources produce cleaner edges. Very small images cut imprecisely regardless of settings, so upload the largest version available.
