Record in the browser, get a WAV you can actually use

Press record, speak, download: a 16-bit mono WAV in three steps. Everything runs in this page — the audio is never uploaded, no account is needed and no credits are charged. Voice-overs, interviews, meeting notes and course narration all work.

Audio stays on your device

Capture, encoding and playback all happen locally. Not a single audio byte is sent to a server, so interviews and unreleased material are fine.

A format you can count on

Always 16-bit WAV. Other web recorders let the browser decide: Chrome gives WebM, Safari gives M4A, and sometimes the file has no duration header at all — you find out when you import it.

You can see it's recording

Live level meter, scrolling waveform and a clipping warning. Hitting the ceiling turns red immediately, instead of ruining a ten-minute take.

Pauses don't count

While paused, nothing is timed and nothing is written to the file. Resume and the take continues — no restarting from scratch.

What a browser can and cannot do here

What it does well: microphone capture, live metering and waveform, pause and resume, device selection, WAV encoding. All of it runs in Web Audio, so there is no server round-trip and no queue.

What it can't do: model-based noise removal, dereverb or transcription. The browser only offers its own echo cancellation, noise suppression and auto gain, which you can switch off to keep the raw signal. A real gate, three-band EQ and loudness normalisation live in Audio Studio.

Where the file goes next

WAV is the lossless exchange format: Premiere, Audition, Audacity, DaVinci Resolve and transcription services read it directly, no transcoding needed. The trade-off is size — about 5.76 MB per minute for mono at 48 kHz, roughly 345 MB per hour.

If you want to edit it (cut flubs, tame the noise floor, hit a loudness target), drag the file into Audio Studio. Those steps run on-device too and upload nothing.

Three steps to a file

  1. 01
    Pick a microphone

The system default is used unless you choose otherwise. External mics and interfaces appear in the list once permission is granted, and the choice is remembered.

  2. 02
    Press start

Keep the 3-second countdown on to get settled, or switch it off to start immediately. Watch the level meter — don't let it sit at the top.

  3. 03
    Listen, then download

After stopping, play it back: click the waveform to jump to a spot. Rename the file and download a 16-bit WAV.

FAQ

Is my recording uploaded?
No. Capture, encoding and playback all happen in this page. No audio bytes are sent anywhere.
How long can I record, and how big is the file?
Up to 60 minutes per take, then it stops automatically. Mono 16-bit at 48 kHz is about 5.76 MB per minute, so roughly 345 MB at the limit.
WAV or MP3 — which should I take?
The default is a lossless WAV that every editor and transcription service opens. After recording, Convert to MP3 compresses it on your device to 96 kbps mono — about 1/8 the size, plenty for speech — with nothing uploaded. Keep the WAV as your master.
Can it remove noise or transcribe?
No. There is no denoise model or speech recognition on-device. You get the browser's own echo cancellation, noise suppression and auto gain, which you can turn off to keep the raw signal. A proper noise gate and loudness normalisation are in Audio Studio; transcription is a server-side feature we haven't shipped.
Does it work on a phone?
Yes, over HTTPS with microphone permission. On iOS the browser may suspend recording when you switch apps or lock the screen, so keep the page in the foreground for long takes.
